Trick or Treat?

Living Well

The human body loves treats. Craves treats. We’re hardwired for it. And the stimulation, satisfaction, and pleasure that hit gives us is reinforcing. Creates habits.

(We have a special treat for all of you this weekend…)

Some habits are easier to form that others. And those habits ironically are often harder to break. Some people define these easy habits as “bad”. I can agree that on the health habit continuum there are certainly habits that are less healthful and some that are downright harmful. And it’s interesting that on the less healthful/more harmful side, the habits do seem to be the ones that are easier to adopt. The payoffs are high and typically instantaneous. And the body misses the payoffs when they fade.

The healthful habits on the opposite end are often considered tougher. They take “more will power,” “better resolve,” and those that struggle to adopt these habits… well they just aren’t “good enough” or “strong enough” are they?

I’m not so sure about that.

Here’s something interesting to consider:

Habits are most likely to stick when they do not require much change.

What if one of the main challenges with adopting “good” habits is we try to take on too much too soon? We set Big Hairy Audacious Goals and twist ourselves into an unrecognizable pretzel. Sure: the hope of a different tomorrow is a heady, wonderful thing. We also have to ensure we set ourselves up for success. That the change is manageable. If it’s immediately rewarding/fun/enjoyable? Even better.

Many of us become tired and fatigued throughout the day. It’s easy and understandable to reach for a quick sugar fix. It will taste and feel so good. So will a cold glass of sparkling water and a 3 - 5-minute body break: A brisk walk outside, 20 squats and lunges at your desk.

Many of us are struggling with stress and feeling overwhelmed. What could be better than a big glass of wine… Can it wait until Friday night? What if during the week, you took 10 - 15 minutes, put on a playlist you love (Classical? Jazz? Something soothing for the soul?) And hit the floor for some great stretching, yoga, or mobility work?

Many of us are frustrated with the lack of time for ourselves. Can you set your alarm for 10 minutes early? Put on a fascinating podcast or an engaging audio book and go for a quick walk or run through a 10-minute workout before your shower.

Get hungry in the afternoon? Cut up fresh veggies twice a week and keep a Tupperware in the fridge. Treat yourself to some really glorious hummus, and try – for a week – to nosh on that every day. The apples are terrific this time of year – maybe cut one up with some peanut butter for a salt/crunch fix.

It’s true that small changes don’t immediately lead to drastic, exciting results. But they start you down a different path. And once you’ve made the first small change the next few often come along quite easily.

Big, Hairy, Audacious Goals have always been my “thing”. But life altering change doesn’t have to be that dramatic. If the “bad” habits can suddenly creep up on you, maybe the “good” ones can too?
